Ghost Town
Diamonds were discovered in the desert at Kolmanskop a few kilometers inland from the sea port of Luderitz in southern Namibia in 1908. The village, to support the mining boom was built in a German style and boasted such amenities as a bowling alley, cinema, casino, ballroom, hospital and ice factory. Mining declined after World War 1 and ceased in 1954. The sands are now taking back their own.
